6-9-10 Airdrie Alberta (Dicks pub report)

Just got word from Greg, Mike and Sheila are in Airdrie Alberta. It’s 42 F or 9 C and raining hard. Currently pulling into the fairgrounds. I’m talking to Sheila as I type this.

When they leave there, they are headed to Madden where they’ll get new tenny runners for Jane and Suzie.  They did stay an extra day in Strathmore due to rain.    Then, it’s the Cowboy Trail headed North.

I swear, it’s like the three stooges.    Sheila said, “we’re going to take 22 to 43″ and in the back ground Mike says, “no, we’re on 22 headed for 772 which we’ll take to 456″.    So Sheila says to me, “Yeah, we’re on 772 and when we leave we’ll be on 43 going to 22.”    I said, “HUH?   Just tell me the town you’re headed for.”   That’s when she said, “Madden Alberta.     Hey, it’s always fun on the phone.

They sure are taking an interesting route. I have lived in Alberta since 1969 and they are going to towns that I never heard of. My daughter lives in Airdrie and that of course, is on the main highway to Edmonton but never heard of Madden.

Jan. You need to understand. Mike is in charge of this trip and really believes that he is going to Skagway Alaska. Jane is the lead horse and being a female, well, you know, she is in charge and will dictate the route.

Actually, saving shoes. Right now they are running on retreads and a couple that are ready to blow. In Madden there is a ferrier that is going to give Jane and Suzie brand new tenny runners. Jane is currently running with two spare tires strapped on with bungee cords, and Suzie is just following along like nothing is wrong. Course, you have to understand that Jane is the pride of the team, she’s in charge. Mike just thinks he is. Ask him about his bruises?

I just met Mike and Jane. They had just headed north on Symons Valley Road toward Madden (they had been traveling West on Hwy 567 from Airdrie, AB. The horses looked great, and Mike and Jane were very cheerful! My daughter will love the pictures I took…she has a paint horse and loves heavy horses, too. I didn’t know until I checked your diary on this website that Mike had a wreck a few days ago! Hope all is well. They are headed into beautiful Alberta country (I grew up not too far from Madden). I phoned a ferrier and great horseman friend of mine named Frank and told them about Mike and Jane and that he should track them down. Don’t know if he’ll get the message or not while they are in the area, but if he does, he’ll help out however he can and certainly provide them with some great company!

    Cheers,

    Joan
